Melvin Lippe gave a seminar at the Land Systems and Sustainable Management Research Group (https://www.geography.unibe.ch/research/land_systems_and_sustainable_land_management_group/index_eng.html) University of Bern on 30.06.2025. The research group is led by Prof. Chinwe Ifejika Speranza. The seminar focused on the intersection of geospatial analysis, policy advice, and sustainability science using examples of the GEOS-EUDR, CITIZEN-SDSS, and Carbon-Leak projects.
In case of GEOS-EUDR he discussed how leveraging Earth observation and geospatial tools can support compliance with the EU Deforestation Regulation increasing transparency in global commodity supply chains.
In case of CITIZEN-SDSS, he showed how the development of participatory Spatial Decision Support Systems can empower local stakeholders and integrate citizen knowledge into sustainable land-use planning and monitoring.
For the case of Carbon-Leak, working package 7, he introduced a novel approach of spatiotemporal land use modeling that can be used for understanding carbon leakage risks to inform climate policy and regulatory frameworks at subnational level.
