The results show that migrant households cleared 28% more forest area for crop production and cultivated 8% more area for annual crops. This provides important insights into the impact of internal migration on deforestation in tropical forest areas. To reduce deforestation pressure, future policies should address the root causes of internal migration, e.g. through investments in landscape restoration and sustainable agricultural intensification in areas of origin.
