One of the main reasons for increasing population pressure in forested areas of Zambia ...

is immigration from other rural regions and in some cases from urban areas. A new study examines the relationship between in-migration, deforestation and land-use change using data from 1123 households in landscapes of the Miombo Forest Region.

The results show that migrant households cleared 28% more forest area for crop production and cultivated 8% more area for annual crops. This provides important insights into the impact of internal migration on deforestation in tropical forest areas. To reduce deforestation pressure, future policies should address the root causes of internal migration, e.g. through investments in landscape restoration and sustainable agricultural intensification in areas of origin.
