EMSAfrica - Ecosystem Management Support for Climate Change in Southern Africa

EMSAfrica is an interdisciplinary research project focusing on the dual impacts of land use and climate change. We develop scientific information to support decision-making in Southern Africa concerning climate change adaptation and mitigation, and the sustainable management of ecosystems.

Background and Objective

  1. Establish infrastructure and modelling tools to estimate the carbon balance of Southern African ecosystems
  2. Assess the potential impacts of climate change on biodiversity and ecosystems
  3. Inform decision making on mitigation, adaptation and climate-resilient land management
  4. Build local capacity to enable sustainable research infrastructures

Approach

EMSAfrica is a joint research project benefiting of the experience of its five German and nine South African partner institutions. The Thünen Institute of Climate-Smart Agriculture is responsible for the technical coordination of the consortium. The overall objective of the project is the improved management of savanna ecosystems in Southern Africa.
