Yi Cheng et al.: Application of enhanced-efficiency nitrogen fertilizers reduces mineral nitrogen usage and emissions of both N2O and NH3 while sustaining yields in a wheat-rice rotation system

The study by Cheng et al. 2022 investigates ammonia and N2O emissions as well as yield effect and N efficiency after fertilisation with treated urea fertilisers. Treatments included application of a urease inhibitor, a nitrification inhibitor or their combination to urea granules and soil application of a biostimulant. In the double-inhibited variant, active ingredient amounts were reduced to exploit possible positive interactions between the two groups of active ingredients. The studies in southern China were carried out in wet rice and winter wheat in an annual double crop rotation. Measurements were taken continuously on the plots for two years. All fertiliser additives had positive effects on reducing trace gas emissions and increasing N efficiency.
