Nexus between biodiversity, agriculture, water, climate and health at regional to global scales (NEXUS)

Biodiversity, agriculture, water, health and climate are tightly interconnected. Changes in any single component can activate or reinforce changes in other components resulting in a complex network of interconnected and compounding risks and opportunities – the nexus. Better understanding how nexus interlinkages and interdependencies unfold and how components interact across systems, sectors and scales is essential to make integrated and adaptive decisions that help seize synergies and minimise undesired trade-offs. Indigenous and local knowledge is vital for understanding and managing nexus interlinkages highlighting that all knowledge systems need to be integrated to inform decision making and design effective actions. Indigenous and local knowledge is crucial for understanding and managing interdependencies. This underscores the need to integrate all knowledge systems in order to make informed decisions and design effective actions.

Background and Objective

This project synthesises insights on nexus interactions to guide decision making and actions:

  • Conceptualisation of nexus interactions and mapping to conceptual framework of IPBES (Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services)
  • Identification of challenges and opportunities that influence the uptake of nexus perspectives in decision making, policy design and implementation of actions
  • Road map for nexus actions for tackling coupled biodiversity, food, water, health and climate change crises
