10 Years new building for the Institute of Baltic Sea Fisheries

10 years ago we moved into our new building directly at the river Warnow – the institute, now part of the Thünen Institute, was still part of the Federal Research Center for Fisheries at that time.

In February 2006, we moved into the new building, which was erected 2 years after 10 years of planning on the area of the former “Fischkombinat”. The official opening ceremony took place on April 1st, 2006. The building offers up-to-date working conditions for about 60 staff. Specifically the technical facilities were much improved compared to those at the old building, located in the former Heinkel aircraft manufacturer apprentice workshop. Since then, many national and international expert groups have met in the building, and the institute is well known for its good working conditions in the Baltic area and beyond. Even in 2016 we often hear from our guests: “This is a pretty new building, isn’t it?”. We continue to improve: in year 10 after moving in we opened a new social room/kitchen on the rooftop and used the old social rooms to host the ever-increasing number of project employees and PhD students.

Some Impressions form the building process and inauguration.
