Development of scientific fundamentals for establishing a balance between fleet size and available quotas.
The project aims at a better understanding of the relationship between fisheries and population dynamics of fish stocks in order to better predict and justify the necessity of fleet capacity adjustment measures.
Fischeries are currently regulated via total allowable catches (TACs) and effort managment. It is hoped that effort managment can help to protect fish stocks from overfishing and illegal fishing. Another aim of this project is to evaluate whether there is a balance between sustainable fishing opportunities and the capacity of the German fishing fleets.
Policy, Science, Public
Each year, relevant information is extracted from German logbook data to conduct analyses on the effort management in European waters. The data are provided to international working groups. Data are also used to address specific questions from the German Ministry of Food and Agriculture regarding fishing activities of the German fleets.
