Substitution of non-renewable materials by biogenic materials in established processes and products

Today, chemical feedstocks and traditional energy carriers are mainly produced from fossil resources. Their depletion and climate change effects due to various conversion processes call for investigation and utilization of renewable resources.

However, as our fossil-based economy is mainly based on petroleum, liquid products should also be the main product from conversion processes of biomass to facilitate their integration into the existing infrastructure.

Lignocellulosic biomass, however, is solid and needs liquefaction or carbon enrichment to be accepted for the chemical and energy driven industry. Hence, our scientists and technicians are devoted to process developments aimed at liquefaction and upgrading of biomass on the basis of established processes from fossil industries. Our experimental facilities range from analytical scale to small process development units.

Thermal degradation or treatment is always our principal conversion step. Depending on the temperature range, physical state (gas or liquid), applied pressure, and time different conversion processes and subsequent upgrading techniques can be studied. Furthermore, educts and products are being analyzed with specific methods to assess processes and product quality.
