Presentation on Innovation in rural regions

Petrik Runst presented a paper at the "Rethinking Clusters" conference at the University of Valencia on the specifities of innovations in rural areas. The conference fosters the exchange of ideas with Spanish researchers regarding the role of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in regional innovation systems.

The preliminary results suggest that the way companies innovate in rural and urban contexts differs from each other. While primarily scientifically driven research and development departments can be mainly found in urban companies, vocationally trained employees in rural companies tend to innovate incrementally. Both types exhibit distinct corporate development profiles that will be further investigated in the course of this research project.

“Rethinking Clusters” is an annual conference attended by European geographers and regional economists. The keynote speech was delivered by Professor Philip Cooke from the University of Western Norway.
