With a delegation of seven scientists, the Thünen Institute of International Forestry and Forest Economics presented studies from the working areas of close-to-nature forest management in the tropics, forest economics and from the research project "Landscape Forestry in the Tropics" (LaForeT).

The Institute of International Forestry and Forest Economics participated with a total of nine presentations and organized three scientific sessions. The presentations depicted current results from various national and international studies, amongst others on causes of deforestation as well as solutions for afforestation and sustainable management of natural resources.

The sessions were devoted to the topics "Ecology, silviculture and management of tropical dry forests", "Benchmarking in forestry - Challenges and solutions for establishing benchmarking systems" and “Traditional, emerging and new forest products in bio-economy – advances and applications in modelling the market potentials and sectoral impacts”.

List of institute’s presentations at the congress:

  • The German Forest Accountancy Data Network - Importance, application and harmonization to other networks. (Dieter, Matthias et al.)
  • SilviBenchmark - Benchmarking forest production data based on “typical enterprises” (Rosenkranz, Lydia et al.)
  • Close-to-nature silviculture from a tropical viewpoint. (Günter, Sven et al.) Ecology and silviculture of dry forests in the tropics: where we are and where we go. (Günter, Sven et al.)
  • Forest degradation and restoration of carbon stocks in Ecuadorian lowland landscapes. (Eguiguren, Paul et al.)
  • Scale and Context Dependency of Deforestation Drivers: Insights from Spatial Econometrics in the Tropics. (Ferrer, Ruben et al.)
  • Socioeconomic predictors of willingness to participate in forest support programs in the Miombo areas of Zambia. (Kazungu, Moses et al.)
  • Willingness to pay for forest conservation in Ecuador: Results from a nationwide contingent valuation survey in a combined “referendum” – “Consequential open-ended” design. (Gordillo, Fernando et al.)
  • Drivers of land use change: Effects on forest structure in Miombo woodlands and implications for sustainable forest management. (Jany, Christina et al.)
  • Traditional and upcoming wood-based products in global forest sector analysis (Schier, Franziska et al.)
