Kristin Franz started working at Thünen Institute after completing her Forestry studies at TU Dresden. In the first years her focus was on analysis of the German Forestry Accountancy Network (FAN). Following she was for several years part of the Thünen evaluation-team, in which she was responsible for forestry related measures of the Rural Development Plans of several federal states.

In 2017 she completed her PhD at the Georg-August-University Göttingen. In her PhD thesis she dealt with implementation problems of contractual nature conservation (title: “Nature protection payments for forest owners – problem and solution approach from the perspective of the Agency Theory”). Afterwards, she could use her advanced knowledge of the topic in the project coordination of the research project “Nature conservation contracts in forests - Analysing options of forest ecology, economics, and legislation (WaVerNa)”.

In her new function in the work area Forestry in Germany she is responsible for the analysis and further development of the FAN. Furthermore, part of her tasks will be the development of approaches for an international comparison of key figures of forestry production systems as well as for a continuous survey of German private forest owners. In the context of the intended national forest damage monitoring (“Remote sensing based National Detection System of Forest Damages”) Dr. Franz will be responsible for the economic damage assessment. Another focus will be handling of inquiries and decrees form the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture.
