Elena Mejia works on the project “Criteria and Indicator for Sustainable Forest Management” (C&I for SFM). This project is implemented by GIZ in partnership with the Peruvian Forestry Service (SERFOR). The project activities address the productive forests in the Amazon region, more precisely in Ucayali and Iquitos departments, both highly intervened to provide timber to national and international markets (EU, China, Korea). This investigative collaboration seeks to understand if a determined C&I framework could eventually help decision-making to efficiently safeguards forest functions inside the formally managed forest. Methods are expected to include cost and benefit analysis (CAB) to address the utility of selected frameworks for different stakeholders. Overall, the results are likely to add to the Peruvian government’s efforts to find a mechanism to support SFM.
