Both institutions are planning a stronger cooperation in analysing and further developing the permanent sample plot network in the Maya Biosphere Reserve in the department of Petén, Guatemala.

The permanent sample plot network was established in the early 1990s. It now comprises of 149 plots distributed in 19 sites. 26 functional experiments are being conducted within the network so far. The network data represent a unique scientific treasure that allows for long-term evaluation of forest growth behaviour in particular under different forest management measures in the largest continuous natural forest area in Mesoamerica.

The hand-over ceremony took place during a visit of members of the budget commission of the German Parliament (Bundestag) in Guatemala and Honduras
