Main objectives of the project are the country wide acquisition of activity data – soil properties, hydrology and land use – and the measurements of carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and methane emissions from organic soils under different land uses, soils and hydrological conditions. The figures on the right and below show two opposite measurement sites: a rewetted and regenerating bog in Bavaria and a degraded peatland under corn in Lower Saxony. A further important objective is the transfer of point measurement to the total area of organic soils. Modelling approaches have to developed to up-scale both the hydrological processes and the greenhouse gas emissions from eleven study areas with more than 60 measurement sites.
The Thünen-Institute of Climate-Smart Agriculture (Working group Emission Inventories) contributes to all modules of the project (Figure below). Tasks include the gas flux measurements in the study area 'Großes Moor' near Braunschweig, the development of automatic closed chambers and the estimation of losses of dissolved organic carbon and nutrients at different scales. Furthermore, scientists work on the development of models for the regionalisation of hydrological processes, particularly on the evapotranspiration and nitrous oxide emissions.
The project will assemble comprehensive knowledge on the status of organic soils in Germany and their greenhouse gas emissions and thus facilitate an improved compilation of the national greenhouse gas inventory. Furthermore, the emission reduction potentials by different land use and management activities will be determined and management scenarios will be implemented to support scientific policy advice.
