Research Scientist (m/f)

a preliminary duration of 2 years in the field of marine population genomics/genomics and environmental DNA, genetic stock separation as well as traceability of fish and fisheries products for a sustainable fisheries management and the development of new tools for food control. The development of eDNA methods and tools shall facilitate fish monitoring programs.

Responsibilities:

  • Heading the molecular genetics lab of the Institute
  • Application of population genetic and –genomic methods for applied research
  • Development of environmental DNA methods for fisheries monitoring
  • Cooperation with other working units of the Thünen Institute and external partners
  • Biostatistics and database maintenance
  • Giving advice with respect to inquiries on aquatic genetic resources
  • Preparation of reports, lectures and academic publications

Your specialist profile:

  • University graduate (Univ.-Dipl./M. Sc.) in biological science, fisheries science or comparable degree subjects with PhD
  • Deep knowledge of molecular genetic methods and tools, population genetics and/or eDNA, preferably with regard to fish together with expertise in the application and analysis of next-generation-sequencing data
  • Expertise in the field of database management and bioinformatics (LINUX/UNIX) as well as the application of relevant software

  • Creativity and interest in exploring new topics
  • Ability to analyze complex contexts, focused working style, critical judgment
  • High degree of motivation, independent initiative and talent for organization as well as good time management
  • Ability to apply team-related and project-related independent working methods
  • Ability to present topics clearly and comprehensively in orally and in writing for different target groups
  • Very good English language skills, good German language skills will be of advantage
  • Willingness and ability to travel in Germany and abroad (driving license and willingness to fly), in conjunction with high flexibility
