Drought or continuous rain, too little or too much water – we have repeatedly witnessed these phenomena in recent years. In future, will there be sufficient water available at the right time for plants? How can agriculture and forestry adapt? What’s more, too many fertilisers pose a strain on water bodies because of nutrient input. Although political decision-makers have taken some steps to protect water, water protection targets are not being met. What’s to be done?

First challenge: in future we must manage fluctuating water quantities. In some regions of Germany less water will be available in future during the vegetation period. On a local level short-term heavy rain will occur more frequently.  These are scenarios of climate research[jm1] . Whereas dry spells jeopardise the growth of crops and trees, heavy rainfall erodes soil. Farmers and foresters in the affected areas must learn to deal with this and, if necessary, adapt their production systems.  [jm1] Es handelt sich um Szenarien/Projektionen , also mögliche Entwicklungen. Second challenge: we will have to focus far more on water quality. Despite measures taken agricultural nutrients continue to place almost the same strain on water bodies in many regions particularly those with high livestock levels. International water protection goals are not being met. The objective must, therefore, be to extract large volumes of nutrients from these hotspot regions.

If we are to successfully tackle these two challenges, we will need in many cases not just inter-farm but, in some cases, inter-regional co-operation. This is where policymakers need to come in and identify existing and foreseeable conflicts between agriculture, forestry, water management and environmental protection, and balance them as well as possible. Scientists from various disciplines at the Thünen Institute, therefore, analyse all relevant hydrological processes and management measures in order to derive management options and offer policymakers and industry competent advice. We are guided by the following questions:

  • In which areas is the seasonal availability of water likely to change and what impact will this have on yields?
  • Which operational (for example, crop cycle, selection of tree species, irrigation and drainage) and inter-farm measures (for instance regional water reserves, nationwide water transport) are to be taken?
  • By how much do nutrients have to be reduced in the hotspot regions and which innovations can be used to cut back nutrient surpluses or even avoid them completely?

The interaction to be researched is so complex that the Thünen Institute cannot do this on its own.  That’s why we have been working successfully for some years now in inter- and trans-disciplinary teams with other research institutions, with practice and with associations. We are the lead institute in several water management and protection consortia in which agriculture and forestry are centre stage. The following main work areas are mentioned by way of example.
