Current Report on "Changing Supply Chains – Ensuring Safe and Fair Trade Routes"

The ZDF documentary sheds light on global supply chains and explores ways to make trade routes transparent and secure. Contributions from the Thünen Institutes for Wood Research and Forest Genetics (Thünen Competence Centre of Competence on the Origin of Timber) regarding the identification of wood species and origins reveal the requirements for monitoring sustainable timber trade.

This compelling documentary covers two current topics: "Trade in tropical woods and shortages in medication." The second part of the documentary focuses on the global trade in tropical woods. In this context, significant challenges exist, as illegal logging and the resulting products have negative social, economic, and ecological impacts. Despite international efforts to combat illegal logging, global deforestation has continued to increase in recent years.

However, there are also positive examples, as demonstrated by the sustainable and legal use of tropical woods from Peru. The report also illustrates the methods used at the Thünen Centre of Competence on the Origin of Timber to ensure the identification of the species and origins of wood and wood products, thus making risk commodity groups identifiable.
