International Workshop concerning sustainable forest management in tropical countries in the interdisciplinary LaForeT Project (Landscape Forestry in the Tropics).

Dr. Melvin Lippe started on September 1st, 2017 his establishment post at the Thünen Institute of International Forestry and Forest Economics, Section Forestry Worldwide.


From 18th to 22nd of September 2017 took place in Freiburg, on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO), a congress with forest scientists from all over the world.


From 21 to 26 August 2017, the Chinese Academy of Forestry (CAF) and the Thünen Institute of International Forestry and Forest Economics held a workshop on economic valuation of forest ecosystem services in Guyuan (Province of Ningxia).


The Thünen Institute of International Forestry and Forest Economics as well as the Centre of Competence on the Origin of Timber started a project in Vietnam.


After one year intensive work with a team of 10 experts and assistants in 12 landscapes, we managed to finalize data collection according to schedule.


During the 7th German-Russian workshop on cooperation in forestry between representatives of BMEL and the Russian Federal Forest Agency, a visit of the Thünen Centre of Competence on the Origin of Timber in Hamburg-Bergedorf took place.


Since May 2017, Dr. Gerhard Dieterle, a German national, is appointed Executive Director of ITTO (International Tropical Timber Organization) who since then guides the destinies of the intergovernmental organization under UN-mandate from its head office in Yokohama, Japan.


Tropical forests are still under enormous pressure and therefore subject to degradation and deforestation.


Dominik Jochem completed his Ph.D. thesis with the title: „Der Holzfluss in Deutschland und seine Preisabhängigkeit am Beispiel Bausektor.“ His doctorate was result of a co-operation between Thünen Institute and the University of Hamburg.
