New Publication: Carbon Sequestration

Leonor Rodrigues et al.: Achievable agricultural soil carbon sequestration across Europe from country-specific estimates

Between 0.1% and 27% of the agricultural greenhouse gas emissions can potentially be compensated by soil organic carbon sequestration measures annually within the next decades. This is the result of another study we were part of within the EJP Soil project. We analyzed the achievable agricultural soil carbon sequestration across Europe based on country-specific estimates. The following measures were mentioned most often: Cover crops, crop residue management, conversion to grassland, permanent grassland, and no-till or reduced tillage. There were different approaches across Europe.

We will develop a standardized approach to estimate the C sequestration potential for Europe in "CarboSeq" which is part of EJP Soil and coordinated by Axel Don & colleagues.
