- WoodForWork- A case-study based analysis of the forest sector's contribution to employment in various countries of the world
How important is the forest sector for income and employment in different countries of the world? This is what we want to find out in this research project.
Background and Objective
Productive and humane work is one of the key factors to reduce poverty. Hence, it is a primary goal of sustainable development. Creation of jobs offers new opportunities in life and prevents regional migration.
According to the International Labour Organisation, currently more than 200 million people are unemployed globally and about 30 million additional jobs need to created annually until 2030 to provide income for the growing world population.
In this context WoodForWork wants to analyse how important the forest sector is for income and employment in different regions of the world.
Approach
Comprehensive data collection, case studies and on-site observations in four different countries are the key instruments for our analysis. We will take a closer look into the role of the so called informal employment as a source of income. How important is for example collecting and selling of fire wood?
Based on the case studies we also want to understand how wood-based employment responds to changes of political and economic framework conditions.
