Capacity Development for forest-related Greenhouse Gas Inventories (CD REDD II)
The preservation of rainforest is an important contribution to the reduction of greenhouse gases. The establishment and implementation of a greenhous gas inventory is challenging for developing countries. The Thünen-Institute of Forest Ecosystems conducted courses and training activities in selected African countries.
The selected countries should have the capacity to develop and report national greenhouse gas (THG) inventories by December 2014. This project will allow all participating developing countries to compile a GHG Inventory following the IPCC Tier1 approach. In the near future, in combination with the monitoring systems under development, countries will be able to compile GHG Inventories also at IPCC Tier2 or Tier3 levels.
Six selected developing countries located in Southern Eastern Africa were in the focus of the project: Botswana, Namibia, Malawi, South Africa, Tanzania and, Zambia. The selcetion of those partner countries was based on a capacity analysis. The target group of the project were experts and policy makers in the field of greenhouse gas inventories and climate reporting in the selected developing countries.
There will be workshops and trainings on global, regional and national scale on general aspects of GHG inventory preparation and on country-specific issues related to developing a complete GHG inventory. This is a basic prerequisite to ensure a prompt start and a full integration of developing countries in the REDD+ mechanism. The project’s capacity-building approach to develop GHG inventories was based on the lessons learnt from previous and recent activities carried out by other technical cooperation agencies (e.g., USA-EPA, UNDP, GIZ etc) and supervised by the UNFCCC Secretariat. It also will build on experiences and approaches to support countries in international reporting processes.
