Sampling based survey of the soil conditions of forest sites

Project

 (c) Erik Grüneberg

Development of a method to estimate the condition of forest soil properties by a sampling based survey and by regionalisation.

Physical and chemical forest soil properties strengthen and buffer the effects of the climate change by their water holding capacity but also as reservoirs of nutrients for biological processes of forest trees. For a long-term based forest management there is a need to consider the state and trends of the soil conditions.

Background and Objective

It is of the utmost urgency to integrate current and expected changes of soil properties into the forest site map. Plot based information of the current forest site condition are available from permanent observation plots (DBF) and from the National Forest Soil Inventory (BZE).

The project aims to identify appropriate silvicultural /ecological indicators of relevant forest soil conditions. For this purpose, a grid sampling will provide basis information.

Approach

1. Analysis and presentation of organic layer and soil data of the NFSI and DBF from two time periods

2. Setting of sampling plots as well as sampling of the organic layer and the top soil according to the BZE in three test areas

3. Laboratory and statistical analysis of the newly established sampling plots

4. Regionalisation of the forest site conditions

5. Methodological suggestions for a sample based survey and regionalisation of forest stand site conditions

6. Preparing a final report and presentation
