Rice production in South-East Asia is faced with a number of challanges: increasing competition due to reduced trade barriers, increasing wage rates and - at least in the mid-term - surpluses in rice. Against this background the project will contribute to a better understanding of the competitiveness of rice - both on the farm level relative to other crops as well as in the international context.

Background and Objective

(1) Creation of a data base for policy advice re. rice production in South-East Asia. (2) Capacity building through the establishment of a sustainable network of rice economists with an ongoing and intensive exchange on results and and new challenges regarding rice economics.

Establishment of a network of qualified economists in rice. Data collection on production systems in rice and respective economic figures for typical rice producing farms in the region.

Data and Methods

This project is based on farm economics figures which are being generated in the course of agri benchmark Cash Crop. This data is used to calculate the economics of (a) crop-specific production systems and/or respective farms.

Preliminary Results

Final report on the FAO funded project is under construction
