The National Forest Soil Inventory (BZE) represents a nation-wide, systematic sampling survey of the condition of forest soils. The first BZE inventory (BZE I: 1987–1993) was carried out on a systematic 8 x 8 km grid using the same sampling plots adopted in the forest condition survey (WZE). The BZE field survey was repeated after 15 years (BZE II: 2006–2008) at the approx. 1900 sample points of the 8 km grid. The inventory is conducted as cooperation between the federal government and the state authorities. The federal states are responsible for the assessment, analysis and evaluation of their own data. The nation-wide evaluation is coordinated by the Thünen Institutes of forest ecosystems, which provided a harmonized dataset for the 35 evaluators of different organizational units.
