From November 04 to 09, 2018 the 54th Council Meeting of the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) took place at ist domicile in Yokohama, Japan. The German delegation comprised representatives from the Federal Ministry of Economics, the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) and Dr. Schröder from the Thünen Institute of International Forestry and Forest Economics.

Gute Stimmung herrschte bei ITTOs Exekutivdirektor Dr. Gerhard Dieterle und Matthias Schwoerer vom Bundeslandwirtschaftsministerium nach der Vertragsunterzeichnung zur Förderung eines Teakprojektes durch die Bundesrepublik Deutschland. After long discussion an agreement was reached for the selection process of ITTO’s future Executive Directors. According to this the qualification of the candidate and a rotation between producer and consumer countries are essentials. Another main discussion topic was the improvement of ITTO’s funding situation including the arrangement of fundraising activities.

Highlights from a German perspective were the signing of a contract between BMEL and ITTO for funding (1 million EURO) of a multi-national project on teak forest manangement in the Mekong River Region. Dr. Schröder from the Thünen Institute was elected Vice-chair of the Committee on Reforestation and Forest Management and will become Chair during the forthcoming Council Meeting in Togo next year.
