Forests do not only supply timber. They are also very important for recreation purposes and supply pure water and clean air.
Our research team determines the value of these so called ecosystem services and relates them to timber production. Hence, we evaluate costs and benefits of the ecosystem services. This is important because efficient forests management should optimize the portfolio of all of the many different ecosystem services. On one hand we develop and apply evaluation methods for ecosystem services. On the other hand we analyze societal demands on forests identified through political decisions and legal rules and regulations.
