The Institute of Baltic Sea Fisheries of the Johann Heinrich von Thünen Institute, Federal Research Institute for Rural Areas, Forestry and Fisheries, offers a 36-month limited position in Rostock to be filled as soon as possible for a

Scientist / PhD student (f/m/d)

on the subject of “acoustic telemetry of Baltic cod”, with half of the regular weekly working hours (currently 19.5 hrs).

The call for applications is aimed at applicants who, in addition to their employment, wish to pursue their own further scientific training, in particular to write a dissertation. In this context, the Thünen Institute cooperates with various universities. The employment contract is limited in time according to § 2 para. 1 sentence 1 of the Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz.

The Thünen Institute of Baltic Sea Fisheries collects various fisheries-dependent and fisheries-independent data series on fish populations and fisheries in the Baltic Sea. In cooperation with international partners these data are analysed in order to develop, among other applications, management recommendations for the different commercially exploited fish stocks. The basis for these activities is a profound knowledge of the biology and ecology of key species like Baltic cod.

The successful applicant is expected to organise and conduct the research work on the ecology of Western Baltic cod in a recently installed telemetry grid in the Lübeck Bight together with colleagues from the institute (e.g. tagging of cod with t-bar tags, acoustic transmitters and data storage tags (DST), collection of oceanographic data with sensors and loggers). Available data and new data collected in the telemetry grid and from recaptures will be analysed using modern statistical methods. It is expected that the results of the work will be published in various reports and scientific publications.

The applicant will conduct applied research on behavior, movement patterns and habitat use of cod and the oceanography of nearshore area, and closely cooperate with national (e.g. Leibniz institute for Baltic Sea Research, Landesforschungsanstalt für Landwirtschaft und Fischerei Mecklenburg-Vorpommern) and international partners. In addition, the applicant is expected to advance the scientific activities of the research group in the field of cod ecology.

Tasks:

  • Support in administration and coordination as well as implementation of research and maintenance work in an acoustic telemetry grid with 30 receivers, 12 equipped with oceanographic data loggers (using our 7m work boat, commercial fishing and research vessels)
  • Analysis of new and previously collected telemetry data, DSTs and oceanographic data using modern analytical methods
  • Development of own research questions, e.g. by connecting movement data and oceanographic parameters, the analysis of otoliths or using tissue samples
  • Writing of scientific papers for publication in peer-reviewed, international journals
  • Supporting public relations activities with target groups (fishers, anglers)

We expect from the applicant the following qualifications:

  • University degree (diploma, M.Sc.) in biology, marine biology, fisheries biology, bioinformatics, biometry or similar disciplines with focus on biometry and statistics
  • Experience in fisheries biology research is advantageous
  • Experience in the field of acoustic telemetry, especially in the analysis of acoustic data sets (preferably with Vemco/Innovasea) and oceanographic data sets, is advantageous
  • Willingness to travel on fishing and research vessels of all sizes (partly self-responsible), and, because of the short planning time, a high degree of flexibility and commitment, and willingness to acquire the certificates necessary for operating small vessels at sea.
  • physical ability to work at sea (seaworthy, lifting and carrying boxes, equipment, and fish boxes)
  • Proficiency in English; for foreign applicants: willingness to learn German is required
  • Quick wit, even with complex questions; independent development and handling of scientific questions
  • A high degree of motivation, conscientiousness, inventiveness, ability to work in a team and the related communication skills, and openness to new things
  • Experience in guiding staff members (e.g. students) is explicitly desired, willingness to guide staff members - especially as a cruise leader - is required
  • Interest in inter- and trans–disciplinary research
  • Extensive experience in dealing with statistics, spreadsheets, presentation- and word processing routines, large data bases, advanced experience with the programming language R
  • Availability to travel in Germany and abroad

We offer a highly interesting job in applied research on the interface between science and management of fisheries, often with strong echoes in the media, which provide the basis for a sustainable management of fish stocks; a well-equipped, modern work place, a large degree of freedom and intense interdisciplinary and international collaboration.
