Biological monitoring and population dynamics of youngfish in German coastal waters
The shallow waters of the German Bight and Wadden Sea serve as nursery grounds for several commercially important fish species. Annual abundance and growth assessments of youngfish allow for a first indication of the level of incoming catches in future years.
The shallow waters of the German Bight and Wadden Sea serve as important nursery grounds for several commercially exploited fish species, which have shown large stock fluctuations in recent years and partly turned to be limited resources by now. Annual abundance and growth assessments of youngfish allow for a first indication of the level of incoming catches in future years. These data are passed on to the relevant working groups of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) and via the responsible ministry (BMEL) to the EU in order to support the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) and its aim of sustainability.
