Biology of brown shrimp

Despite a long tradition of a commercial exploitation of brown shrimp in the North Sea, there are still major gaps in our knowledge about the biology, ecology and population dynamics of this species. Our aim is to change this.

Background and Objective

Despite a long tradition of a commercial exploitation of brown shrimp (Crangon crangon) in the North Sea, there are still major gaps in our knowledge on the biology, ecology and population dynamics of this species. Besides C. crangon, there are other closely related species in the area with quite a different biology. The project is based on data from research vessels independent of commercial operations. Data are collected to describe the seasonal distribution and the life cycle of brown shrimp, to identify potential influences on the stocks and communities by the commercial exploitation or by natural environmental variables. These investigations also offer the background for possible considerations to establish conservation measures such as closed seasons or areas (protection of the spawning stock, reduction of by-catch).

Preliminary Results

  • First results from the analysis of the long-term dataset showed a significant relationship between fluctuations of the brown shrimp stock size with environmental parameters. With these results, it becomes possible to predict the development of the Crangon stock in German coastal waters for the forthcoming year. Additional results on biological parameters (such as size-at-maturity, sex ratio) can be used for the life-cycle model developed for the ICES Working Group on Crangon Fisheries and Life History. This model can determine stock development under different scenarios of natural and fishery mortality and can certainly be improved with better basic input parameters. This progress is a pre-condition before possible conservation measures for the currently unregulated stock can be discussed.
