DCF (Data Collection Framework): Data collection for the catch structure of the commercial fisheries on cod, herring, flounder and sprat in the Baltic.
Biological sampling of the commercial fisheries in the Baltic Sea is one of our main tasks. At-sea observers regularly go onboard of commercial vessels to measure their catches at sea. In the laboratory, we process unsorted fish samples from the commercial fisheries to collect the biological parameters (e.g. maturity, age).
Fisheries and catch data are collected for the most important commercially used fish stocks of the Baltic Sea (cod, herring, sprat, flatfishes) within the scope of the German National data collection program. This program is a permanent task, primarily given by the EU regulation 1639/2001 (Data Collection Framework, DCF).
The population models, which are used for stock assessment, require input data such as the number of one-, two- and three-year old cod in the landings and in the discards. Therefore, we have to connect the commercial landings data from the logbooks of the fisher (given in kg per fish species per area, quarter and gear type) with our biological sampling data from the commercial fisheries. The biological sampling data are collected within the scope of our ongoing sampling of commercial fishing vessels at sea. We sample both the active fisheries (trawlers) and passive fisheries (gillnetters, longliners, trap nets). Our at-sea observers determine discard rates and length distributions in the landings and discard part of the catch. The analysis of individual fish from commercial samples provides information on important biological parameters such as weight, sex, maturity or age.
