Monitoring the Bioeconomy

In the EU project BioMonitor we address the information gap in bioeconomy research by re-structuring its existing data and modelling framework.

Background and Objective

Over the last two decades, EU policy makers have prioritized the expansion of the bio-based value chains through various policy and research programmes. Bioeconomy, as envisaged by the EC, is supposed to make a considerable contribution to the achievement of different economic, environmental and social goals in the EU and Member States. While the attention to the bioeconomy is growing, its representation in statistics as well as its coverage in models used for policy impact analysis is lagging behind in various ways.

The overall objective of the “Monitoring the Bioeconomy” (BioMonitor) project is to establish a sustainable data and modelling framework for the bioeconomy in the EU. This will be achieved by developing and implementing a data and modelling framework.

Approach

The project works in a three-fold approach by:

1. Closing the data gaps observed when measuring the bioeconomy by using new and improved datasets
2. Enhancing existing modelling tools that guide industries and policymakers in defining long-term strategies
3. Creating a stakeholder engagement platform and training modules to validate and disseminate the data and modelling framework developed by the project

Thünen-Institute of Market Analysis is mainly involved in the development and operationalization of the BioMonitor Model Toolbox. for supporting the EC to quantifying the future impacts of present-day decisions on the bioeconomy.

To close existing modelling gap and address developments of bio-based product value chains in the EU, we develop a new partial equilibrium model for bio-based commodities, the BioMat model.

As it will draw its supply of bio-based material mainly from the agricultural sector it will be built upon both the conceptual and IT-technical framework of AGMEMOD.

Further, we lead a case study on dynamics on the markets for feed grade amino acids and insect biomass and contribute to the development of indicators for the monitoring of bioeconomy, as well as scenario analysis of the future bioeconomy developments.
