At the Institute of International Forestry and Forest Economics of the Johann Heinrich von Thünen Institute, Federal Research Institute for Rural Areas, Forestry and Fisheries a fixed-term position

a scientist (m/f/d)

is to be filled earliest for the duration of three years in the working area Forest and Society.

The position provides the opportunity for post-doc qualification as a policy adviser in state or federal agencies as well as in applied sciences. It is a fixed-term employment according to § 2 Abs. 1 Satz 2 Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz.

The Thünen Institute is a Federal Research Institute in the portfolio of the Federal Ministry for Food and Agriculture (BMEL). Its task is to develop scientific decision support for politics and to expand knowledge for the benefit of the common good. The working area of forest and society examines and assesses the costs and benefits as well as the sustainability of the multiple benefits of forests.

Tasks:

• Systematically analyse efficiency and effectiveness of national and international forest certification schemes on enterprise and sectoral level
• Compare certification schemes with alternative governance instruments supporting sustainable forest management
• Develop approaches to improve efficiency and effectiveness of forest certification schemes and alternative governance instruments in cooperation with working area International Forestry
• Publish scientific papers
• Support conceptualisation and application of research projects

Technical/functional skills:

• University degree (Univ.-Diploma/M. Sc.) forestry or related disciplines
• Doctoral degree in a related topic
• Excellent knowledge of structure and function of national and international certification schemes are required
• Excellent knowledge of governance instruments supporting sustainable forest management are desirable
• Sound knowledge of forest management and economic key figures are desirable
• Working experience with stakeholders in the forest sector is desirable

Personal skills:

• Operational readiness, flexibility, teamwork and resilience
• Goal-oriented and independent way of working
• Ability to analyse and present complex scientific issues
• Excellent command in spoken and written German and English, good command in spoken and written Spanish is desirable
• Readiness for regular business trips

The salary is based on the collective agreement for civil service (TVÖD). Depending on the fulfilment of personal and tariff requirements the salary is conform to level E13 TVÖD. In general, part-time employment is possible.
