Postdoc researcher (f/m/d)

The position is to be filled within the third party funded DAM pilot mission MGF (Exclusion of mobile bottom-fishing in the German Natura 2000 areas).

The project aims to investigate the effects of a future exclusion of mobile bottom fishing from the three Natura 2000 sites of the German Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). In the current first phase of the project, the ecological status of the sites will be described in order to assess the long-term effects on the dominant habitats and communities in the protected areas after exclusion.

The main focus of the position is to develop models and methods to study the impact of fisheries exclusion on fish and epifauna communities in the three marine protected areas. The applicant will use modern statistical methods and GIS-based analyses to analyse the functional characteristics of the communities in relation to prevailing fishing intensities and various environmental factors. Furthermore, the applicant is expected to actively participate in the publication and communication of the results.

Detailed tasks

  • Analysis of existing monitoring and fisheries data (Vessel Monitoring Data) and relevant physical environmental parameters
  • GIS based processing of the project data
  • Collaboration on a trait-based database for demersal fish and epibenthos and the spatial modelling of such traits
  • Support of project management, reporting, publication and communication of results

Requirements

  • A PhD in Marine Biology, Fisheries Biology  or comparable disciplines
  • Experience in data compilation and handling
  • Proficiency in the use of R, handling of spatial data in R or/ and ArcGIS
  • Experience in time series analysis and spatial modelling
  • Excellent statistical skills
  • Excellent communication and writing skills in English and at least the willingness to learn German; a knowledge of the German language would be beneficial
  • Work experience in interdisciplinary research teams
  • Excellent communication skills and proven track record in publishing scientific results
