Scientist (m/f/d)

The Institutes of Biodiversity and of Farm Economics at the Johann Heinrich von Thünen-Institute, Federal Research Institute for Rural Areas, Forestry and Fisheries, in Braunschweig is seeking

a scientist (m/f/d)

in the area of ‘Agroecological transformation towards sustainable land-use systems’. The term of the position is 28 month, starting at April 1st, 2021. It is a part-time position with 27,3 hours per week (70 %).

The position is within the EU Horizon 2020 CSA project ‘Agroecology for Europe’ (AE4EU). The goals of AE4EU are to develop a framework for agricultural Living Labs (LL) and similar Research Infrastructures (RI) for the European Union and to establish a European Agroecology Exchange Network. AE4EU seeks understanding of structures and functions of existing LL/ RI and will develop tools and frameworks for future LL and RI’s to accelerate the transition to sustainable agriculture and food systems. Overall, AE4EU will empirically analyse current LL/ RI, identify successes and impediments of transition towards sustainable land use and will develop resources that pathway future policies relevant to agroecology in Europe and beyond.

Job description:

  • Establish an inventory/ database of LL and RI’s using existing data and information
  • Carry out questionnaire surveys of (selected) LL/ RI on project management procedures, research methods, data management and co-design processes
  • Analyse functional and structural patterns in contemporary LL and RI’s
  • Analyse methods of field monitoring and research data management in LL and RI’s
  • Investigate LL and RI’s towards sustainability aspects
  • Develop concepts and guidelines for LL/ RI and contribute to developing tool boxes
  • Generate reports, presentations and manuscripts (methodological papers on LL/ RI) for publication of own results in international peer-reviewed journals; Present project-related results at internal and external meetings
  • Support the organization and performance (pre/ post) of focus group meetings
  • Support development of SMART indicators

Your profile:

  • University degree (M.Sc., Univ.-Diploma) in agroecology, environmental science, landscape ecology, sustainability, geoecology or closely related fields
  • A PhD (or equivalent) in one of those fields would be desirable
  • Interest in agricultural and environmental topics and good understanding of agroecosystems and farming systems required
  • Experience in applying multidisciplinary methods and methodologies required
  • Experience in statistical data analyses, preferably with R required
  • Comprehensive knowledge of stakeholder engagement and analysis required
  • Principal understanding of effects of cultivation practices on biodiversity, pollination, biocontrol and soil fertility desirable
  • Ability to work independently and strong capacity for inter- und transdisciplinary teamwork required
  • Experience in working within international and multi-partner research projects would be an advantage
  • Candidates should speak English fluently and have very good writing skills in English
