Postdoc researcher position (f/m/d)

is to be filled within the project MuSSel (Multiple Stressors on North Sea Life).

The Thünen Institute of Sea Fisheries addresses ecological and economics questions regarding fisheries. The announced position is located in the working group “Marine spatial management” (see www.thuenen.de/en/sf/fields-of-activity/marine-spatial-management).

MuSSel is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and integrates high-resolution models to gain a better understanding of combined effects of climate change and multiple human pressures on the North Sea ecosystem. Central elements are the analysis of spatio-temporal trends in human pressures and the development of an operational framework to assess the risk of cumulative effects of human pressures on fish and benthic communities.

The successful candidate will contribute significantly to the development and implementation of an operational framework to assess the risk of cumulative effects of human pressures on fish and benthic communities. This framework will allow evaluating management options and informing marine spatial planning. In addition, the candidate is expected engage actively with MuSSel stakeholders, and contribute to the project coordination, dissemination and reporting.

Detailed tasks

• Compilation of existing physical, ecological and economic time series and spatial data of the North Sea in a project GIS data base,
• Contribution to trait based data base for demersal fish and epibenthos, spatial modelling of such traits and the overlap analysis with human pressures
• Development of an operationalisation framework to assess the risk of cumulative effect of human pressures for demersal fish and epibenthos with the help of Bayesian Belief Networks (BN),
• Development of stakeholder engagement processes to assess the applicability of such a framework and contribute to its implementation as a web-based decision support tool
• Contribution to project management, reporting, publication and communication of scientific results.

Requirements

• A PhD in Marine Biology, Fisheries Biology, integrated ecosystem assessment or comparable disciplines,
• Experience in data compilation and handling,
• Proficiency in the use of R, handling of spatial data in R or/ and ArcGIS,
• Experience in applying Bayesian Belief Networks would be an asset,
• Experience in time series analysis and spatial modelling,
• Excellent communication and writing skills in English and at least the willingness to learn German. A knowledge of the German language would be beneficial,
• Work experience in interdisciplinary research teams,
• Excellent communication skills and proven track record in publishing scientific results.

 Employment complies with the German wage agreement for the civil service sector (TVöD Bund), salary group E13 (if the personnel requirements are fulfilled). Part-time employment may be negotiated.
