The possibility of taxing the CO2 content of imports at the European Unions’ external border, with the aim of preventing carbon leakage, has long been the subject of political and scientific debate. This option is currently suggested within the framework of the European Union's ´Green Deal’. Agriculture is responsible for about a quarter of all greenhouse gas emissions globally and at the same time, the EU is the world's largest importer of agri-food products. Thus, its’ inclusion into a border adjustment system is expected to exert a certain leverage in reducing emissions. The aim of the project is to develop concrete options for a CO2 border adjustment system for agricultural products and to assess the consequences of their implementation.
