Scientist (m/f/d)

The Thünen Institute of International Forestry and Forest Economics of the Johann Heinrich von Thünen-Institute, Federal Research Institute for Rural Areas, Forestry and Fisheries, in Hamburg invites applications for a part-time position with 31 hours per week as

a Scientist (m/f/d)

as project team member of the research project ‘Monitoring the sustainability of the bioeconomy in Uruguay’ (BioMonUruguay).

The position is limited to a fixed term until the 31.12.2021 and is to be filled as soon as possible.

The Thünen Institute is a Federal Research Institute in the portfolio of the Federal Ministry for Food and Agriculture (BMEL). Its task is to develop scientific decision support for politics and to expand knowledge for the benefit of the public. The working area of forest and society examines and assesses the costs and benefits as well as the sustainability of the multiple benefits of forests.

Tasks:

In close cooperation with counterparts in Uruguay and guidance by FAO the applicant’s tasks are:

• Provide a definition of system boundary, cut-off criteria for sectoral sustainability assessment of Uruguayan bioeconomy
• Selection of economic branches corresponding to bioeconomy according to the system boundary definition
• Quantification of biomass related activities in the selected economic branches
• Selection and quantification of progress and sustainability indicators on sectoral level targeted to strategic objectives, based on the decision of the Uruguayan stakeholders
• Communication note defining target groups and strategies to communicate results to consumers and policy makers
• Co-elaborate a protocol with guidelines for further development of M&E of bioeconomy in Uruguay, in close cooperation with counterparts in Uruguay

Technical/Functional skills:

• University degree (MSc or diploma) in agricultural economics, forest sciences, economics, environmental or natural resources economics or related field
• Extent and relevance of experience in conducting sectoral analyses or cluster studies either of the agricultural and food or forest or biotech sector
• Extent and relevance of knowledge of sustainability assessment
• Extent and relevance of knowledge of national and environmental accounts, national and international trade and production statistics, energy and environmental statistics
• Demonstrated experience in drafting technical reports and papers in English/Spanish

Personal requirements:

• Operational readiness, flexibility, teamwork and resilience
• Goal-oriented and independent way of working
• Ability to analysis and presentation of complex economic and scientific issues
• Excellent command in spoken and written English and Spanish
• Readiness for business trips

The employment contract is based on the provisions of the collective agreement for the public service (TVöD); payment of the fee is according to fee group E 13 (TVöD).
