The Institute of Farm Economics of the Johann Heinrich von Thünen-Institute, Federal Research Institute for Rural Areas, Forestry and Fisheries, in Braunschweig is offering a 4-year full-time position (39 hours per week) for the next possible date for a

Research Assistant (f/m/d)

(Agricultural sciences with an economic focus, Production economics arable farming,
international competitiveness)

for the research project „International competitiveness of crop production and changing production systems“.

The employment is designed to develop own scientific qualifications beside main duties. The scientific results achieved in the project can be used for a PhD thesis. In this context, the Thünen Institute cooperates with various universities. The term of employment is regulated by § 2 (1) S. 1 Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz.

Your tasks:

• Analyse key differences in agro-climatic conditions and respective crop production systems and their economics for selected key crop production countries
• Identify and analyse key challenges in crop production (e.g. available inputs, environmental regulations)
• Identify and assess economically viable options for growers to manage these challenges
• Derive thereof scientific based recommendations for policy makers
• Organize and lead on-farm data collection (data gathering, checking and analysing) as well as expert interviews and workshops
• Prepare reports, presentations and academic publication

Professional requirements:

• University degree (M.Sc.) in agricultural sciences with a focus on agricultural economics
  (e.g. Agricultural Economics, Economics and Social Sciences in Agriculture, Agribusiness)
• sound economic knowledge, experiences to apply quantitative and qualitative analysis methods
• Solid knowledge of crop production systems and experience in economic analysis of farms and farming systems is a strong plus
• Practical experience in crop farming and on farm data collection is an advantage
  

Personal requirements:

• Interest in working on scientific questions in interdisciplinary project - also with agricultural practice
• Analytical thinking, critical judgement
• Good communication skills
• Team-oriented and independent working, ability to cooperate with partners and co-workers
• Interest and ability to cooperate with international research institutions and advisory services
• Ability to present complex issues in an comprehensible and target group oriented manner, in particular very good writing skills for scientific reports and publications
• Candidates must be fluent in English (written and spoken) as this the working language in the team
• German and other language skills are a benefit
• Willingness and ability to travel in Germany and abroad (driving licence and willingness to fly), in conjunction with high flexibility

The employment relationship is governed by the provisions of the German Tariff Agreement for Public Services (TVöD-Bund) and includes comprehensive health, social and pension insurances. The salary is according to remuneration group 13 TVöD. If interest is expressed, it will be assessed whether a part-time position of employment is possible.
