Scientist (f/m/d) (project FInAL)

The Institutes of Biodiversity and of Farm Economics at the Johann Heinrich von Thünen-Institute, Federal Research Institute for Rural Areas, Forestry and Fisheries, in Braunschweig are offering a full-time (currently 39 hours per week), fixed-term position for 12 month to be filled as soon as possible for a

Scientist (m/f/d)

to work within the project FInAL (www.final-projekt.de). In the frame of the “Action Programme for Insect Protection” („Aktionsprogramm Insektenschutz“), FInAL will establish landscape laboratories in typical and representative agricultural landscapes of Germany in which innovative measures for facilitation of insects through integrated cultivation of renewable resources in a landscape context will be developed, demonstrated and evaluated.

The aim of FInAL is to transform existing and established agricultural production systems into innovative systems. A fair and meaningful comparison of the sustainability of both systems requires a combination of agronomic and economic indicators for informing about the profitability, stability, resilience and tolerance of the respective systems. Those indicators need to be monitored within the landscape laboratories. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing such an indicator system.

Responsibilities: 

  • Compilation of sustainability indicators of agricultural production systems
  • Valuation of suitability of indicators for system comparisons and transformative processes
  • Development of survey methods for those indicators within Agroecosystem Living Laboratories
  • Participation in project meetings and workshops
  • Publishing in international and national scientific journals; oral presentations

Your profile:

  • University degree (M.Sc., Univ.-Diploma) in Agricultural Sciences, Agronomy, Transformation Studies or related disciplines (of inter-/transdisciplinary character)
  • A PhD in one of these subjects is desirable
  • To be interested in questions in the fields of agricultural or environmental sciences is a prerequisite
  • To be experienced in monitoring of transformation processes (with a particular focus on agroecology) is desirable
  • Very good knowledge and substantiated experience in indicators of agricultural systems is required
  • Autonomous working style is required
  • Good capacity for teamwork and flexibility are required
  • Very good knowledge of English (written and spoken) is required and have basic knowledge of the German language
