The Thuenen Institute of Sea Fisheries of the Johann Heinrich von Thuenen Institute, Federal Research Institute for Rural Areas, Forestry and Fisheries, is offering a full-time position for the next possible date for a

Scientist with specialisation in hydroacoustics (f/m/d).

The Institute of Sea Fisheries conducts ecological and economic research on fisheries. The advertised position belongs to the research unit ‘Operational observation systems’ (see https://www.thuenen.de/en/sf/fields-of-activity/operational-observation-systems).

The Thuenen Institute has access to three modern fisheries research vessels with state-of-the-art hydroacoustic equipment (EK80 broadband echo sounder, CS90 omnidirectional sonar) and has a number of mobile, stationary and autonomous echo sounders (WBAT, WASSP, ARIS) at its disposal. In 2023, a new vessel, ‘Walther Herwig’, will be put into service, along with additional multibeam echosounders and sonars (ME70, MES70). We are looking for an employee who can contribute her/his ideas and skills to the further development of the research area and who can take over political advisory tasks of the institute in this field. The scientific focus is to develop analytical tools for the processing of extensive hydroacoustic data sets, e.g. with the help of artificial intelligence (AI) and big data methods.

Tasks:

• Operation of the hydroacoustic instrument array for fish stock recording and ecosystem characterisation during research cruises of the Thuenen Institute
• Further development and optimisation of hydroacoustic methods and models for the estimation of stock biomass and distribution patterns of pelagic fish and other ecosystem components
• Development of AI-based methods for analyses of hydroacoustic data
• Implementation of these methods into routine applications and data streams in the institute and their connection to the database and working group system of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES)
• Intensification of the cooperation with working groups of the institute in the field of modelling and stock assessments of pelagic fish species
• Participation in stock assessments relevant to the Thuenen-Institute for pelagic fish species, such as mackerel and herring
• Policy advice for the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture and other clients, as well as through contributions to relevant ICES working groups
• Publication in international peer-reviewed journals

Professional requirements:

• University degree (Univ.-Dipl./Master) in Fisheries Biology with in-depth knowledge of Hydroacoustics / Computer Science / AI / Data Science or Physics or a university degree (Univ.-Dipl./Master) in Computer Science / AI / Data Science or Physics with in-depth knowledge in Fisheries Biology and Hydroacoustics or equivalent university education
• Ph.D. desired
• In-depth knowledge and experience in operating the above-mentioned scientific echosounders
• Extensive knowledge and experience with software for processing and evaluating hydroacoustic raw data (Echoview, LSSS) as well as other relevant analysis methods and models
• In-depth knowledge of AI applications, especially the use of AI for pattern recognition in large data sets, information mining and similar methods
• Experience in planning, execution, management and evaluation of scientific surveys-at-sea
• Experience of participation in international working groups such as ICES or STECF would be an advantage

• Ability to communicate complex issues clearly and comprehensibly for different target groups
• Ability and willingness to lead and work in interdisciplinary teams
• Willingness to undertake work trips lasting several days and research cruises lasting several weeks
• Very good written and spoken German and English language skills

The employment relationship is based on the provisions of the Collective Agreement for the Public Service (TVöD). The payment of the remuneration is made when the personal and collective bargaining conditions are fulfilled up to remuneration group 14 TVöD. Later qualification for civil service is not excluded. Part-time employment may be negotiated.
