Junior Researcher (f/m/d), Keyword: Weather Insurance

(PhD candidate, agricultural economics)

in the research project ‘Quantitative analysis of public support for insurances against systemic weather risks and their impact on farm competitiveness and climate adaptation strategies’.

The position is to be filled as soon as possible and is limited to 4 years. The employment is designed to develop own scientific qualifications. The own scientific results achieved in the project can be used for the PhD thesis. The term of employment is regulated by § 2 (1) S. 2 Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz.


  • Assessment of importance and costs of systemic weather risks in Germany
  • Quantitative evaluation of options for public intervention (e.g. premium subsidies, support or provision of re-insurance, potential of index-based insurance)
  • Data collection and quantitative analysis of the impacts of existing support programmes in neighbouring countries on production and farm level risk management
  • Support the further development of existing farm models with respect to the analysis of risk management and development of a common platform for stochastic simulation of risk management strategies
  • Publishing and presenting methods and results in scientific journals and at international and national meetings

Professional requirements:

  • University degree (M.Sc.) in agricultural economics or in economics with a strong agricultural background
  • Solid knowledge of farm and production economics
  • Good knowledge of quantitative methods

Personal requirements:

  • Interest in scientific questions and willingness to aspire a PhD
  • Analytical thinking, critical judgement
  • Team-oriented and independent working methods, ability to cooperate
  • Candidates should be fluent in English (written and spoken), German language skills are desirable
  • Willingness and ability for multi-day business trips at home and abroad

The employment relationship is governed by the provisions of the Wage Agreement for Public Services (TVöD-Bund) and includes comprehensive health, social, and pension insurances. The salary is according to category 13 TVöD. Part-time employment is generally possible.
