The Thünen Institute of International Forestry and Forest Economics of the Johann Heinrich von Thünen-Institute, Federal Research Institute for Rural Areas, Forestry and Fisheries, in Hamburg invites applications for a fulltime position in the working area “Forestry Worldwide” as

Scientist (m/f/d)

with focus on silviculture, forest management and restoration of tropical forests.

The position is limited to a fixed term of three (3) years and is to be filled as soon as possible. The position offers the opportunity for further development of scientific occupational skills with the goal to qualify for prominent tasks in scientific policy advice and applied research. The fixed-term employment is in accordance with §2 (1) 2 of the German Temporary Science Employment Law (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz, WissZeitVG) .

The Thünen Institute of International Forestry is currently conducting the interdisciplinary research project “Landscape Forestry in the Tropics” (LaForeT, together with partners in Ecuador, Zambia and the Philippines aiming at findings for science based policy advice to reduce tropical deforestation.

Deforestation and degradation of tropical forest landscapes often result in negative outcomes for the provisioning of important ecosystem services for different land-user groups. They also represent the main sources of greenhouse gas emissions during land-use and land-use change. Therefore, research at the Thünen Institute aims at the elaboration of comprehensive analyses of silvicultural options for tropical natural forests, restoration and reforestation derived from examples in Ecuador, Zambia and the Philippines.

Within this project different silvicultural options for the improvement of forest land-use potentials shall be identified and proposals for appropriate management guidelines shall be derived. The holder of the position will have the opportunity to qualify scientifically in time-series analyses or modelling techniques.


  • Analyses of data sets from forest inventories in different forest types (primary, logged secondary forests, succession phases, forest plantations incl. soil data)
  • Analysis and assessment of effects from different silvicultural scenarios on potential forest use and selected ecosystem services
  • Cross-country data analyses for Ecuador, Philippines and Zambia
  • Development of a concept for the establishment and management of permanent sample plot networks of logged forests and reforestation measures with partner organizations from Ecuador, Zambia, Guatemala, Namibia and the Philippines
  • Presentation of research results at international conferences
  • Publications in international journals and policy briefs
  • Interdisciplinary cooperation within the team of the working area

Requirements (mandatory):

  • University degree (diploma/M.Sc.) in Forestry or a degree in related subjects, preferably with focus on tropical forest management
  • PhD, preferably in tropical silviculture or management of tropical forests
  • Very good command of English, good command of German (verbal and written, negotiating skills)
  • Work experience in tropical regions, fitness under tropical field conditions

Requirements (highly welcome):

  • Profound knowledge in ecology and biogeography of forest ecosystems worldwide
  • Experiences in silviculture of tropical natural forests and forest plantation management
  • Good knowledge of methods for the calculation of consequences of different silvicultural scenarios on forest use potentials and selected ecosystem services
  • Strong knowledge in statistics and analysis procedures
  • Openness, creativity and high motivation in taking over new tasks
  • Flexibility, team capacity, ability for intercultural and interdisciplinary cooperation and personal engagement are required

The employment is governed by the Wage Agreement for Public Services (TVöD-Bund). Remuneration is in accordance with tariff-category 13 TVöD. Part-time employment is in principal possible.
