Senior Scientist (f/m/d)

as head of the Working Group on Fish Diseases. The position is to be filled as soon as possible.

Studies on the occurrence and causes of fish diseases play a major role in research on the marine environment, aquaculture and biodiversity within the scope of the Thünen Institute of Fishery Ecology. An established and internationally coordinated monitoring program on environmental stress mediated fish diseases in the North and Baltic Seas, including histopathological investigations, shall be continued and, if necessary, developed further. Additional research topics addressing the above-mentioned work areas shall be elaborated.


  • Head of the Working Group on Fish Diseases
  • Application of epidemiological, histopathological and other common methods in fish pathology for field surveys and experimental studies
  • Development of new methods, including molecular pathology, for detecting and diagnosing fish diseases
  • Cooperation with other work areas of the institute as well as with external national and international partners
  • Participation in relevant scientific committees
  • Processing of inquiries and policy advice on fish diseases and fish parasites related to the areas of environmental diseases and diseases in aquaculture
  • Fund raising and publications

Professional requirements:

  • University degree (M.Sc., license) and a PhD in veterinary medicine with a focus on fish or in biology with experience in fish pathology
  • In-depth expertise in epidemiology, diagnostics, histopathology and molecular pathology in fish
  • Good knowledge of databases and statistical analyses
  • Experience in the conception, acquisition and management of research projects
  • Solid experience in the publication of research results
  • Very good knowledge of spoken and written English and a strong commitment to learn German

  • Analytical mind and critical judgment abilities
  • Team player with the ability to work independently and in the context of interdisciplinary projects
  • High level of personal motivation, initiative and organizational skills as well as good time management skills
  • Ability to present complex issues clearly and understandably in writing and verbally for different target groups
