The Thünen Institute of Climate-Smart Agriculture of the Johann Heinrich von Thünen Institute, Federal Research Institute for Rural Areas, Forestry and Fisheries in Braunschweig (Germany) invites application for a 

Scientific assistant position (f/m/d)

 for the period from 01.08.2019 till 30.09.2021.

The successful candidate will work in the joint research project “GHG mitigation trough model based optimisation and evaluation of cropping systems for renewable resources – Effects of data requirements and uncertainty on prediction accuracy for model based evaluation and mitigation of nitrous oxide emissions from raw material cropping systems (THG-EMOBA)”.

The project aims to describe and optimise greenhouse gas mitigation options for renewable cropping systems using biogeochemical models. The focus is on direct and indirect nitrous oxide emissions from managed soils.  Before models will be used to assess and optimize management practices, they will be calibrated and validated on comprehensive data sets spread across Germany.  Effects of incomplete or estimated input data on model results will be analysed. It is aimed to develop meta- models that describe nitrate leaching losses in dependence on climate, soil properties and management options.  The position at the Thuenen Institute is part of a cooperation with the University of Kiel.


  • Preparation of experimental data for model calibration and validation
  • Calibration and validation of biogeochemical models with focus on nitrous oxide emissions and nitrate leaching for raw material cropping systems,
  • Analyse the interacting effects of management and natural conditions on nitrous oxide emissions,
  • Model based optimisation of agricultural systems
  • Development of meta-models that describe nitrate losses by leaching based on results from process models,
  • Presentation of project results on scientific conferences and workshops,
  • Writing of reports and papers in peer reviewed journals


  • A Master’s degree in agricultural science, environmental science, geoecology, physics (or equivalent)
  • A doctoral degree is appreciated
  • Experience with high level programming language (R, Python)
  • Knowledge of programming languages C or C++ is advantageous
  • Experience in biogeochemical modelling is appreciated
  • Experience with the processing of large data sets and in data based modelling
  • High motivation and analytical skills
  • Very good English skills

Employment complies with the German wage agreement for the civil service sector (TVöD Bund), salary group E 13. Parttime is possible.
