The Thünen Institute of International Forestry and Forest Economics of the Johann Heinrich von Thünen-Institute, Federal Research Institute for Rural Areas, Forestry and Fisheries, in Hamburg-Bergedorf is offering a 75 %-position (currently 29,25 hours per week) in the working group ‘Forestry Worldwide’ for a

Researcher (f/m/d)

(forestry sciences or geoinformatics, or related disciplines, preferable with experience of tropical forestry)

for the evaluation of spatial goal conflicts of ecosystem services in tropical forest landscapes. The position includes the possibility to work on a PhD thesis and is limited to a fixed term of three (3) years and is to be filled as soon as possible. The temporal contract-limitation is based on § 2 (1) S. 1 Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz.

The Thünen Institute is currently conducting an interdisciplinary research project “Landscape Forestry in the Tropics” (LaForeT) ( in cooperation with partners in Ecuador, Zambia and the Philippines that seeks to produce science-based policy advice to reduce tropical deforestation. Deforestation and degradation of tropical forests are likely to have negative impact on the provision of ecosystem services (wood, non-wood products, carbon, and biodiversity). The advertised position will characterize and evaluate options for avoiding goal conflicts in the use of forest-based ecosystem services of tropical humid and dry forests..


  • Analyses of existing forest inventory data sets from the LaForeT project for upscaling of forest use potentials from plot- to landscape-level using geostatistical approaches
  • Develop methodological design for the assessment of ecosystem services in tropical wet and dry forests under changing land use conditions in Ecuador, Philippines and Zambia using spatial modelling approaches such as
  • InVEST
  • Assessing synergies and goal conflicts of ecosystem service provisioning as a result of tropical land and forest use
  • Presentation of research results at international conferences
  • Publications in international journals and support to policy briefs
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to achieve research outcomes


  • University degree (Diploma/M.Sc.) in Forestry or Geoinformatics or related subjects, preferably with a focus on tropical forest management
  • Experience in using inventory data
  • Profound knowledge in multivariate statistics, analysing satellite images, geo-statistics, and preferably spatial modelling
  • Knowledge of tropical land and forest use
  • Working experience in tropical countries, fitness under tropical field conditions.
  • Openness, creativity and high motivation in taking over new tasks
  • Very good command of English (oral and written, C1 level), basic German as well as Spanish knowledge would be an asset
  • Flexibility, team capability, ability for intercultural and interdisciplinary cooperation and personal engagement are mandatory

The employment is governed by the Wage Agreement for Public Services (TVöD-Bund). The payment of remuneration is carried out according to tariff-category 13 TVöD.
