Researcher (f/m/d) "National LaForeT Governance"

The Thünen Institute of International Forestry and Forest Economics of the Johann Heinrich von Thünen-Institute, Federal Research Institute for Rural Areas, Forestry and Fisheries, in Hamburg-Bergedorf is offering a 75 %-position (currently 29,25 hours per week) in the working group ‘Forestry Worldwide’ for a  

Researcher (f/m/d)

(forestry, natural resource management, geography or related discipline with specialization in policy or governance topics, preferable with a focus of tropical landscapes)

as a ‘governance specialist for tropical forest polica analysis within the LaForeT project’. The position includes the possibility to work on a PhD thesis and is limited to a fixed term of 18 month and is to be filled as soon as possible. The temporal contract-limitation is based on § 2 (1) S. 1 Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz.

The Thünen Institute carries out the LaForeT project (www.la-foret.org) together with partners in Ecuador, Zambia and The Philippines aiming to produce science based policy advice to reduce tropical deforestation. Forest Governance at the field level has already been assessed in all three partner countries. National governance studies are currently initiated under the organizational lead of the partners. Evaluation and publication of the results is foreseen jointly by the Thünen Institute and the partners. National governance results will be linked to local governance and to spatial modelling as well as to socio economic systems evaluations within LaForeT partly using the same data.

Tasks:

  • oversee the implementation as well as data entry of the national policy studies within LaForeT in the partner countries
  • assist in the coordination of governance data evaluation joining forces from partner countries and Thünen Institute
  • carry out parts of the forest governance evaluation using Quantitative Comparable analysis (QCA), Social Network analysis, qualitative evaluation methods and multivariate statistical tools
  • publish results in peer reviewed scientific journals
  • support the further development of the governance component of the LaForeT project
  • collaborate closely with colleagues of other workpackages in the project on interdisciplinary scientific topics in the context of tropical deforestation
  • Ability and willingness to sporadic travels in tropical countries

Qualifications needed:

  • University degree (diploma/M.Sc.) in Forestry, Natural resource management, Geography or in a related discipline with a specialization in policy or governance topics or university degree in policy sciences or related field with a specialization natural resource management, preferably with a focus on tropical landscapes
  • Knowledge and preferably experience with major conceptual policy frameworks (e.g. actor centered power, governance concepts and indicator frameworks, policy network analysis)
  • Methodological knowledge in quantitative policy analysis (e.g. Quantitative Comparable analysis – QCA, social network analysis - SNA), including standard multivariate statistical tools, as well as qualitative evaluation approaches (e.g. content analysis)
  • Experience with forest management and policy analysis in tropical countries
  • Good communication skills in multicultural and interdisciplinary environments
  • Publication experience in peer reviewed journals
  • Proficient English skills, German and Spanish would be an asset

The employment is governed by the Wage Agreement for Public Services (TVöD-Bund). The payment of remuneration is carried out according to tariff-category 13 TVöD.
