Researcher (f/m/d) "Modelling"

The Thünen Institute of International Forestry and Forest Economics of the Johann Heinrich von Thünen-Institute, Federal Research Institute for Rural Areas, Forestry and Fisheries, in Hamburg-Bergedorf is offering a 75 %-position (currently 29,25 hours per week) in the working group ‘Forestry Worldwide’ for a

Researcher (f/m/d)

(forestry, agricultural, environmental sciences or related disciplines, preferable with experience in GIS-Modelling and knowledge of tropical land use)

for modelling of land user dynamics in tropical forest landscapes. The position includes the possibility to work on a PhD thesis and is limited to a fixed term of three (3) years and is to be filled as soon as possible. The temporal contract-limitation is based on § 2 (1) S. 1 Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz.

The Thünen Institute is currently conducting an interdisciplinary research project “Landscape Forestry in the Tropics” (LaForeT) (www.la-foret.org) in cooperation with partners in Ecuador, Zambia and the Philippines that seeks to produce science-based policy advice to reduce tropical deforestation. Deforestation and degradation of tropical forests are likely to have negative impacts on the provision of ecosystem services (wood, non-wood products, carbon, and biodiversity). The advertised position will characterize, evaluate and model scenarios for avoiding goal conflicts in the use of forest-based ecosystem services in tropical humid and dry forests. The opportunity in pursuing a doctoral degree is given.

We are seeking for a researcher in forestry/agricultural/environmental sciences, or a graduate from related disciplines, preferably with experiences in GIS/Modelling and knowledge of tropical land use.

Tasks:

  • Using and enhancing existing landscape models such as CLUES or InVEST under consideration of actors-based decision processes
  • Testing modelling approaches for selected forest landscapes in Ecuador, Philippines and Zambia building on existing data of the LaForeT project
  • Simulating a series of scenario for evaluating goal conflicts of relevant land use decisions and ecosystem services along a deforestation and forest degradation gradient
  • Presentation of research results at international conferences
  • Publications in international journals and support to policy briefs
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to achieve research outcomes

Requirements:

  • University degree (Univ.-Diploma/M.Sc.) in Geoinformatics or related subjects (e.g. Agriculture/Forestry/
  • Environmental Sciences), preferably with a focus on geoinformation systems (GIS)
  • Profound experience in spatial modelling and geo-statistics
  • Experience in using Phyton or R software
  • Knowledge of tropical land and forest use, preferably by working experience in tropical countries,
  • Fitness under tropical field conditions.
  • Openness, creativity and high motivation in taking over new tasks
  • Very good command of English (oral and written, C1 level), basic German as well as Spanish knowledge would be an asset
  • Flexibility, team capability, ability for intercultural and interdisciplinary cooperation and personal engagement are mandatory.

The employment is governed by the Wage Agreement for Public Services (TVöD-Bund). The payment of remuneration is carried out according to tariff-category 13 TVöD.

The Thünen Institute promotes the professional equality of women and men and is thus especially interested in applications from women.

Severely disabled applicants with equal qualification will be given particular consideration. Only a minimum physical aptitude is expected from them.
