(forestry sciences or related disciplines, preferably with specialization in tropical forest management)

in the working group ‘Forestry Worldwide’ for Evaluation of restoration measures of forested landscapes in terms of land-use potentials and ecosystem services in the tropics. The position includes the possibility to work on a PhD thesis and is limited to a fixed term of three (3) years and is to be filled as soon as possible. The temporal contract-limitation is based on § 2 (1) S. 1 Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz.

The Thünen Institute is currently conducting an interdisciplinary research project “Landscape Forestry in the Tropics” (LaForeT) ( in cooperation with partners in Ecuador, Zambia and the Philippines that seeks to produce science-based policy advice to reduce tropical deforestation. Deforestation and degradation of tropical forests are likely to have negative impact on the provision of ecosystem services for different land user groups. They also represent the main source of greenhouse gases in the fields of land use and land use change. Thünen’s research goal is the comprehensive analysis of options and restrictions for forest restoration with examples from Ecuador, Zambia and the Philippines. Within this project, various silvicultural options for restoration of utilization potentials and ecosystem services shall be identified, analyzed and classified according to cost-benefit criteria for different land user groups.


  • Analyses of available data sets from forest inventories and plantation studies (including soil data).
  • Supervision of supplementary field work, eventually in the form of subcontracts e.g.
  • collect plot-based forest and agroforest data,
  • record of cost structures of alternative land use types,
  • execute key-informant interviews, focus group discussions and other social empirical methods for the socio-economic context and Governance.
  • Identification and evaluation of forest restoration practices and their impact on forest utilization potentials, carbon sequestration and other ecosystem services.
  • Selection and implementation of cost-benefit analyses in comparison with different user groups and ecosystem services.
  • Conducting of cross-country analyses for Ecuador, Zambia and the Philippines.
  • Presentation of research results at international conferences.
  • Publications in international scientific journals and policy briefs.
  • Interdisciplinary cooperation within the team.


  • University degree (diploma/M.Sc.) in Forestry or a degree in related subjects, preferably with focus on tropical forest management.
  • Profound knowledge in silviculture and agroforestry in tropical countries.
  • Experiences and profound knowledge of methods of cost-benefit-analyses, dealing with geo data, knowledge of social-empirical methods.
  • Willingness and capacity to familiarize with new scientific methods.
  • Strong knowledge in advanced statistics.
  • Work experience in tropical countries, fitness under tropical field conditions.
  • Proof of independent scientific work
  • Openness, creativity and high motivation in taking over new tasks
  • Very good command of English (verbal and written), basic German as well as Spanish knowledge would be an asset
  • Flexibility, team capability, ability for intercultural and interdisciplinary cooperation and personal engagement are mandatory.

The employment is governed by the Wage Agreement for Public Services (TVöD-Bund). The payment of remuneration is carried out according to tariff-category 13 TVöD.
