Job offers of the Thünen Institute

Scientist (m/f/d) 19-076-BD-engl

The Institute of Biodiversity at the Johann Heinrich von Thünen-Institute, Federal Research Institute for Rural Areas, Forestry and Fisheries, in Braunschweig is offering a full-time position (currently 39 hours per week) for a

Scientist (m/f/d)

for the development of molecular biological approaches for a wild-bee-monitoring scheme within the joint project Monitoring biodiversity in agricultural landscapes. The position is limited to a fixed term of three (3) years and is to be filled as soon as possible. The temporal contract-limitation is based on § 2 (1) S. 2 Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz.

Germany currently has no comprehensive data on the status and trends of biodiversity in agricultural landscapes. Against this background, the joint research project consisting of 11 specialized institutes of the Thünen and Julius-Kühn-Institute as well as the Information and Coordination Centre for Biological Diversity of the Federal Agency for Agriculture and Food aim at developing a modular monitoring scheme to survey biodiversity in agricultural landscapes in Germany (

Wild bees are important structural and measure indicators in agricultural landscapes and play a considerable role in ecosystem services such as pollination. In this context nest material can be scrutinized for cause-effect analyses, to assess the impact of environmental change and pesticide applications on wild bee populations and subsequently also on ecosystem functions and stability. The main task of the position is to develop sampling methods and analyses of pollen and eDNA.

Job description:

  • Develop and improve molecular biological approaches for the determination and estimation of species abundances (e.g. wild bees, plants, parasites, pathogens) from trap nests:
  1. develop and optimize protocols, techniques and workflows of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) of mixed samples (metabarcoding) in accordance with existing approaches
  2. develop quantitative molecular biological approaches for estimations of species abundances (qPCR)
  • Compare performances of metabarcode data sets against high-quality biodiversity data sets
  • Exchange and cooperation with technical authorities, nature conservation organisations and scientific institutions to implement the metabarcoding and qPCR approach in monitoring programmes and Citizen Science projects
  • Publishing and presenting results in international and national scientific journals and at conferences

Your profile:

  • University degree (M.Sc., Univ.-Diploma) in landscape ecology, agro-ecology, environmental science, biology, or closely related fields
  • A PhD in one of those fields is necessary
  • Experienced in ‘high-throughput sequencing’
  • Very good knowledge in bioinformatics and biostatistics
  • Enjoy developing methods with necessary endurance
  • Interest in agricultural and environmental topics
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and strong capacity for interdisciplinary teamwork
  • Candidates should be fluent in English (written and spoken), German language skills are desirable

We offer work in an active and stimulating scientific environment on questions of high relevance at the intersection between basic and applied life science and agriculture. The project promotes the collaboration and interaction with experts from national and international research organisations. The Thünen Institute offers a family-friendly environment, flexible working hours and the possibility for further training and qualification.

The employment is governed by the Wage Agreement for Public Services (TVöD-Bund). The payment of remuneration is carried out according to tariff-category 13 TVöD. A part time position is also possible.

The Thünen Institute promotes the professional equality of women and men and is thus especially interested in applications from women.

Severely disabled applicants with equal qualification will be given particular consideration. Only a minimum physical aptitude is expected from them.

Please contact Prof. Dr. Jens Dauber (phone: +49 531 596 2501) for enquiries about the position.

Applicants should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and copies of relevant certificates. Electronic submission is preferred. E-mail all application material (subject 19-076-BD) in a single pdf file no later than 31.03.2019 to
