The Thünen Institute of Market Analysis of the Johann Heinrich von Thünen-Institute, Federal Research Institute for Rural Areas, Forestry and Fisheries, invites applications for a

Scientist (m/f)

The position is limited to a fixed term of 34 months and is to be filled as soon as possible. It is placed in the context of the EU project ‘Monitoring the Bioeconomy (BioMonitor)’. Its main focus is to compile data on material use for energy and technical purposes in the bioeconomy, in developing and implementing a bio material module into an existing model system and in conducting simulations within a European context.


  • Compilation of data sets related to model bioeconomy processes in a partial equilibrium model
  • Development of a concept to implement different processes of energy and material use of in the framework of the partial equilibrium model (AGMEMOD)
  • Design and analyzing of model scenarios
  • Comparison and harmonization of model results with other models applied by project partners
  • Publications in international journals and policy briefs
  • Collaboration with other project partners and projects, national and international organisations and firms
  • Writing of scientific and user-oriented project applications with international project partners


  • University degree (diploma/M.Sc.) in Agriculture or a degree in related subjects, preferably with focus on agricultural economics, informatics, mathematics and related disciplines
  • Experience in programming (e.g. GAMS)
  • Qualified experience in the application of partial equilibrium models and the related data base
  • Knowledge in impact assessment of policy measures with regard to international markets in agriculture and food
  • Openness, creativity and high motivation in taking over of complex issues in economics and natural sciences
  • Ability to present scientific results to a broader audience
  • Flexibility, team capability, ability for interdisciplinary cooperation and personal engagement are mandatory
  • Willingness to travel
  • Very good command of English (verbal and written) and basic German

The employment contract is governed by the provisions of the collective agreement for civil service (TVöD). Remuneration is in accordance with tariff-category 13 TVöD. Part-time employment is in principal possible. The fixed-term employment is in line with § 2 (2) of the German Temporary Science Employment Law (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz).
